Next Level Chat: Our Why

So really the plan is dream it, believe it’s possible for you, learn it, plan it and then do it. If you can do those things, if you can sort of get yourself to accomplish all those certain things, you can go out and achieve these goals that you have in your life.

Join us as we share our experiences as a father, daughter duo, who are trying to accomplish their goal

of financial freedom. We hope you learn more about how to define and achieve your American dream. Here's another episode of Next Level, American Dream.

Sean: [00:00:35] Hi, everybody. Welcome to Next Level American Dream podcast. We're going to try a new format today. I mean, we're just going to talk to each other about some of the things in our business and how we operate, try and give you guys some information to help you kind of understand this a little better.

I understand our business a little better and get to know us a little better. So hopefully that works in this interview sort of style thing that we're going to try and w we'll give a shot. Okay? So what do we want to start with? I guess we're going to start with why we do [00:01:00] this.

Abigail: [00:01:00] Yeah. Our, why I was talking about our, why, what motivates us?

What's our purpose in our business.

Sean: [00:01:05] Yeah. You want to go first? Do you want me to do it?

Abigail: [00:01:07] Let's have you go first year? You're the main head honcho in here.

Sean: [00:01:13] Well, my why has changed, so I, over the years in my business, I started with, my goal being is just to generate income, income for us to have financial freedom and to be able to do the things that we want to do in our lives.

and that's still one of my goals, but, since you've joined the company, the goal has changed a little bit to where we want to build a business. that you can then take the next level. So when we're trying to generate or create a legacy business, I guess you would call that, to have, you, career, right.

So for us, for, for me and your mom and Diana, so we're, we're looking for retirement, I guess you could say, or financial that financial retirement anyway. and, that's one of our primary goal in the business and that's our number one why, I guess. And then the second, why would be, to build something that you could then take to the next level?

Abigail: [00:01:59] Yeah. [00:02:00] mine is not as future-focused, maybe it is, but really my, why is I went into college. I'm still in college, but went into my college career, thinking about what I wanted to do with my life and how I wanted my life to look like after I graduated and I really realized that I did not want to work for someone else, that I really wanted to be an entrepreneur and have my own business.

And I talked to you and we kind of just teamed up and the rest is history. And now what keeps me going is creating a career path for myself and. be able to have a family in the future and be able to have flexibility to travel and kind of live the life that I really know that I want to live and have that freedom to do so.

Sean: [00:02:53] So let me, so you're you're I think what you're saying is that you want to create a lifestyle that's driven [00:03:00] by, your, your. happy life as opposed to a lifestyle that's, that's sort of centered around a career. And the way you're trying to decide to do that was to go into your own business and invest in real estate like I do so that you can then have

a lifestyle that sort of fits what you want and the business feeds that as opposed to you feeding the business all the time and having to live a lifestyle that the business creates, right?

Abigail: [00:03:23] Yes. Yes. For sure.

    Sean: [00:03:26] Yeah. That's important. I think

Abigail: [00:03:28] we touched on this a little bit, but how did we get started in business together?

    Sean: [00:03:34] Well.

Abigail: [00:03:34] Let's hear that story.

Sean: [00:03:35] yeah, so, I've been in real estate best for a long time and you were just headed to college. and I think you were planning on, going to law school possibly afterwards. This was really early on in your, in your college career and you were studying finance like you are now and considering a law degree.

But after that, you were saying to yourself. Maybe between the finance degree and the law degree, I'll take a little gap year and a little travel. So you came to me and said, [00:04:00] Hey, I think I want to take a gap year, and travel a little bit between, grad school and, my law degree. And I said, well, that's great baby, but I'm not paying for that.

So, cause I said, you know, if anybody's going to get a chance to travel for a year, it's going to be me. And you said, well, that's why I'm talking to you. I want to kind of learn what you do and, and figure out a way to use my real estate investments to fund my gap year so that I can go off and travel and have fun, but not have to worry about having a job and income and things.

So we started to map out for you. a strategy that, that would, that, that would, that would achieve that, right? How many rentals you needed, you know, kind of what your income levels needed to be. And it wasn't that big, you know, you,

Abigail: [00:04:44] we planned it out. I think it was 10 house, 10 rental houses at the time.

Sean: [00:04:49] Maybe. Yeah. I don't even if it was that much even, but, yeah, so we. you didn't really need a lot of money just to travel around and kind of feed yourself. You know, it's not like a lifestyle that I have with the mortgages and cars and stuff, [00:05:00] and college tuitions and things. So, yes, we mapped out your, your process, but at the same time, I was kind of, questioning a little bit about my business and saying, Hey, you know, why am I buying single family properties one door at a time?

Is there a way for me to do this and scale it up? And a multi-family, was that, was that method for me, answer that question for you. Yeah, exactly. You know, with multi-family I can buy a hundred doors at a time or, you know, 200 doors at a time and have that scalable business. and so I started to venture into that and, and as you and I were talking about what you wanted to do and what I wanted to do, the idea was, Hey, let's just join forces and, And work on this together, right?

You started to see this as a path for you. And, as we were moving into multifamily, it's starting to make more and more sense. So, that was kind of the process, I think, for us to merge together. And, you know, the idea is that I have certain skill sets, you have certain skill sets and they're pretty complimentary.

    So yeah,

Abigail: [00:05:57] we seem to, we seem to mesh pretty, [00:06:00] pretty flawlessly. so the next thing I want to talk about is. You have this thing called a success formula. And I want you to kind of explain that. I think it's, it's interesting and how we think about how we manage our business.

Sean: [00:06:14] Yeah. I don't know. it's just something I kinda thought of, I dunno when I did, but it's been a while, but it's, it's just sort of a plan that you have to go through sort of the basic steps of taking a dream and making it a reality.

Right. And. You know, and, and when you're entrepreneurial, you're always kind of thinking of these things. How can I, how can I make these steps work, right. Yeah. And so I think for everybody, you have a dream, everybody kind of has a dream. They want to achieve things. They want to accomplish something.

They want something in their life. They want financial freedom. They want cars, you know, whatever it is. And so the dream is really the beginning. Yeah. And all of us kind of have dreams. Well, what we want to accomplish, it's how to take that dream. And. And create a planet [00:07:00] that, that maps it out and creates a reality out of it.

Right? So it's, so the first thing is dream it, second thing. And I think this is one of the first, what is the first step, but it's one of the harder steps, right? So believing it's possible, so you can dream it and you can see it, you know, there's people that own giant corporations and they, they own giant buildings and they, they own, they own these things.

Are they are there. professional athletes or whatever it is, they, they, those dreams that people have, you can see that it's happening and it is possible, but believing it's possible for you is, is the hard part,

    Abigail: [00:07:32] whole nother level.

Sean: [00:07:33] That's that's yeah. That's what, that's really the change that you have that has to happen in your, in your own mind to make the rest of the plan of work.

So if you. You can see that things are happening and people are doing things, but then, then convincing yourself, Hey, I can do this too. Right. So with me, apartment investing is a good example. I'm I actually, initially I didn't think the individuals really did this business. I thought it was all hedge funds and re-its and large entities [00:08:00] that own these apartment buildings.

And I met Corey Peterson. He talks about his story. I've heard, Tim story as well, and few others. I realized that, Hey, there's individual guys just like me, that can, that can do this business. Yeah. So then I realized it is possible. So I know it's possible, but is it possible for me? And I had to get to a place where I believe that I can do it and that I had the skill set and then I had the ability to overcome whatever challenges I was going to have.

And then I had to believe it was possible for me. So believing it was possible for me was really the next step.

    Abigail: [00:08:31] Yeah.

Sean: [00:08:33] And I guess, what's step three is learn it.

    Abigail: [00:08:36] Yeah.

Sean: [00:08:37] So once you, once you believe that you can do it and accomplish it, you have to go out and learn everything, right? So not everything, but you have to go out and learn enough to kind of get started, right?

So learning what it takes to, to make your dream real. So in apartments, again, it's understanding the asset class, understanding how they're purchased, how to acquire them. You know, what to look for, where to go, to get them, how to fund them, how to [00:09:00] operate them, all those sorts of things. You have to learn all that stuff.

And then once you kind of learn the business, you have to create a plan that executes that, that knowledge and that, you know, how so we started with our dream. I dream that I want finacial freedom. I believe it's possible for me. I see it's happening. I've learned, you know, the business and now I start to create my plan.

So the plan is okay, I want to go buy an apartment building. so I needed to contact brokers, get on lists. I need to, you know, learn how to underwrite those deals. go see those deals, putting offers, you know, all those things at the same time, we're, engaging investors and people that would want to fund our deals and work with us as investors and all those sorts of things.

So that's my plan. So I have a plan of, I need to execute this many underwritings to get to this many tours, to do these things. So that's my plan. And the last step is, is do it, right? Yeah. So you can dream it. You can believe it's possible for you and you can [00:10:00] learn it and you can plan it. But if you don't go and do it, if you don't take those steps, those action steps, the massive action that everybody talks about.

If you don't do those things, it's never going to happen. Right? Yeah. And I think a lot of people, they get stuck. These are like, these are like trigger points all throughout the process. So the dream is great. Everybody has a dream. Everybody has a dream. And most people stop at the believing it's possible for them.

That's where the first, I guess the dream gets killed and it's sad, you know, you gotta, you really gotta believe in yourself. The second problem is people don't want to learn, you know, they don't want to learn these new things.

Abigail: [00:10:35] don't feel like they have time to learn it.

Sean: [00:10:36] They don't have time. Yeah.

There's there's life is, life does get in the way of, of these, you know, accomplishing larger goals that most people have. And then creating the plan is it's complex. It's difficult. I'm not very good at that part. I struggled really hard with it, but I still do it, but I can. Yeah. Yeah. Or you can find people to help you.

Right. This is what we've done. and then going out and doing it. So for me, the doing it part is the easiest part. [00:11:00] That's kinda what I excel in.

    Abigail: [00:11:01] Specialize in.

Sean: [00:11:03] I love, I love getting, just getting up and going. Right. So my, my thing is just, let's go do work. Let's get to work. Right. So for me, that's the easiest part. I struggle with the middle section.

I'm really good at dreaming. And I'm really good at doing so believing it's possible for me. I have to have that confidence in myself. You know, I wear a shirt every day or sometimes it says, I believe in me just to remind myself that I, that it's possible for me.

Abigail: [00:11:24] Yeah. We have, I believe in me and we have massive action on t-shirts.

Sean: [00:11:29] And so I think that's the plan. So really the plan is dream. It, believe it's possible for you. Believe it. Learn it. Plan it and then do it. And if you can do those things, if you can sort of get yourself to, to accomplish all those certain things, you can go out and achieve these goals that you have in your life and big goals that you want to achieve.

It's really, it's simple, but it's not easy at all. Right. That's another thing I like

Abigail: [00:11:51] Simple, not easy. Absolutely.

Sean: [00:11:53] Sure. It's very simple. It's dream it. Believe it. Learn it, plan it. Do it. But [00:12:00] doing that is a lot of work. It's a lot of commitment. It's a lot of, it's a lot of dedication and you have to really be obsessed with your dream to make all those other steps possible.

Right. So that's my success formula.

Abigail: [00:12:12] Yeah. And you have to have your why to drive you and motivate you for the things that you don't want to do, and that you don't feel like you can accomplish. It is what gets you out of bed and allows you to keep going every single day when things seem difficult.

    Sean: [00:12:28] Yeah. Yeah.

That's the obsession part. You have to make sure that your why is, is, is strong enough that you're obsessed with it, that you have to make this happen because it is so hard to, to follow all those steps. If you don't have a target to shoot for every day, it's easy to give up really easy to give up

Abigail: [00:12:45] yeah, very. Well. We hope that this gave you some more information about both of us and what drives us and how we approach our business. And we'll see you next time.
